Local playwright Rob Drummond enjoys American success
THE playwright has also just scooped a top award, winning Best New Play of the year for his tale Quiz Show at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) which were held last week. Quiz Show focuses on a cheesy 1970s game show host, played by TV star Jonathan Watson, before taking a turn into darker areas.

CATS celebrates the cream of Scottish theatre
LIKE many people, I always had a sneaking respect for Woody Allen's contrary refusal to grace the Oscars with his presence on the basis that the Academy would persist in holding them on the one day in the week when he had a regular gig playing jazz clarinet in a New York bar. There is a man with a proper sense of priorities. However, as time goes by, my dismissal of the circus of awards ceremonies has become less exclusive. I will now admit to quite liking two: the Scottish Album of the Year, happening this Thursday in Glasgow's venerable Barrowland Ballroom, and the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, held last Sunday in Edinburgh's Traverse.

Firebrand scoop national theatre title
BORDERS-BASED Firebrand Theatre Company has won a top Scottish theatre award for their critically acclaimed touring production of Iron. Former Taggart actress Blythe Duff, who took the lead role of Fay Black in Rona Munro's prison drama, won in the Best Female Performance category at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) which was held at a packed Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh on Sunday night.

HOLLYWOOD actor Alan Cumming and former Taggart star Blythe Duff have picked up the best actor awards at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). Cumming won for 'an unforgettable, bravura performance' in the National Theatre of Scotland's one-man Macbeth. The Perthshire-born actor, who had previously won a Tony award on Broadway, said Macbeth was 'the thing I am most proud of in my whole career'.

Theatre critics salute Perth and Pitlochry
Perth Theatre picked up two major accolades on Sunday night. The theatre was recognised at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) for its production of Conor McPherson's The Seafarer. The play, about hard-drinking Irishmen celebrating Christmas, was the only production to win two awards at the ceremony at Edinburgh's Traverse Theatre. Pitlochry Festival Theatre scored a coup for its venture into seasonal musicals - it was given the award for best sound and music for its hit production of the Berlin classic, White Christmas.

The List wins Best Production
ON Sunday 9 June the 11th Annual Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) 2013 was held at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. The CATS celebrate the best achievements in Scottish theatre, and this year their 10th anniversary coincided nicely with the Traverse's 50th. Despite the brilliant sunshine, at 3pm the Traverse Bar was crowded with theatregoers and professionals sipping sparkling wine and chatting until the ceremony began shortly after 4pm.

Not only was it the Traverse Theatre's 50th birthday party, but it was the 10th CATS (Critics' Award for Theatre) Award ceremony, hosted as ever by CATS convenor, Joyce McMillan, with her usual cheerful authority. Adding to the day's glamour and bringing his unique style and casual panache as this yearÕs guest presenter was our own stellar playwright and artist, John Byrne. A more apposite choice for this auspicious sell-out event would be hard to imagine.

WHAT a different a year makes. Exactly 12 months ago, as the great and good of the Scottish theatre world gathered at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow, storm clouds hovered ominously overhead. These were the early, dark days of what became known as the 'Creative Scotland stooshie' and there was no escaping the issue. Kieran Hurley, who scooped the coveted best new play at the Scottish theatre 'Oscars' last year, was among several winners and presenters to speak out on a shake-up from the quango, which had cut adrift dozens of arts groups from the safety net of annual support.

Double joy for Perth play at Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland
PERTH Theatre's ambitious production of the Seafarer scooped two awards in the 2013 Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). THE annual Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) took place last night at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh, with recognition for some of Scotland's leading theatre practitioners. Actor Alan Cumming took home the Best Male Performance award for his widely-admired one-man performance of Macbeth, while the Best New Play award went to Rob Drummond, for his play Quiz Show. Drummond's play will now move to The Traverse for an extended run during the Fringe. A DARING and controversial play partly inspired by the Jimmy Savile scandal, Hollywood actor Alan Cumming's one-man version of Macbeth and Taggart star Blythe Duff's portayal of a husband killer have all been honoured at the Scottish theatre Oscars. Rob Drummond's unsettling drama Quiz Show, which starts off as a comedy about a garish game show before lurching into much darker territory, was named best new play of the last year by Scotland's leading drama critics.

Ex-NTS chief Vicky Featherstone celebrated by Scottish critics
VICKY Featherstone is to be awarded a special CATS Whiskers award at the Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, at Edinburgh's Traverse theatre this weekend. Featherstone has been recognised for her work as the founding artistic director of the National Theatre of Scotland, from where she has now moved on to the Royal Court. She will be only the second recipient of the award, which celebrates an outstanding achievement in Scottish theatre not already reflected through the other award categories.

The CATS have got the cream
NOW in its 11th year, the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) has made this year's announcement of nominations. The Awards are open to any professional theatre work produced in Scotland between May 1 2012 and 30 April 2013, and around 180 new productions that opened in the year were considered, 106 of which were new plays/scripts and 36 productions created for children and young people.

Theatre award nominations for PFT
PITLOCHRY Festival Theatre's first ever go at a Christmas musical has brought it two nominations for a major Scottish theatre awards. White Christmas has received two Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS) nominations, one for Best Music and Sound, and another for Best Production. The prestigious CATS nominations were announced early yesterday. John Durnin, PFT chief executive said: "This is the first time that a PFT show has been nominated in the Best Production category and it's a testament to the incredibly hard and undeniably high quality work that so many PFT staff put into the show."

Alan Cumming, Maureen Beattie, Blythe Duff and Iain Robertson are among those in the running for on-stage performances over the last year. The Royal Lyceum Theatre in Edinburgh and the National Theatre of Scotland are leading the running in the shortlists for the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland. They have also been jointly recognised for co-productions A Doll's House and The Guid Sisters.

FAMILIAR faces and fresh talent are all to the fore in the nominations for this year's Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, sometimes even in the same production. Blythe Duff, now throwing off the role of DS Jackie Reid in STV's Taggart is nominated for her role as murder Fay Black in Rona Munro' play Iron which was revived last year by the brand new Firebrand Theatre Company based in Hawick.

City theatres prepare to take a bow
GLASGOW'S Citizens Theatre is up for six gongs at the prestigious Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland. The NTS' nominations range across six shows. Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum also has eight nominations, but across five shows. Director Hill lands in hall of fame with latest theatre awards nominations
DOMINIC Hill became the most recognised director in the history of Scotland's leading theatre awards after picking up two further nominations this year. The artistic director of Glasgow's Citizens Theatre took the number of nominations he has received in the Critics' Awards for Theatre to 12 after the 2013 shortlists were announced. In what is the 11th year of the awards, he is shortlisted in the best director category and his production of Krapp's Last Tape is nominated for best production.

Everybody wants to be a cats
LOOKING through the shortlist for this years Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland, (CATS), announced this morning, is to be reminded of the importance of prizes like these (alongside the recently announced Scottish Album of the Year Award). This year five shows have been shortlisted for best production rather than the usual four: Quiz Show at the Traverse; Krapp's Last Tape/Footfalls at the Citizens; White Christmas: The Musical at Pitlochry Festival Theatre; The List, premiered at Summerhall during last year's Edinburgh Fringe; and The Seafarer at Perth Theatre. So much good work was produced by Scottish companies last year, the panel say, that it was impossible to narrow the shortlist down to four choices.
