Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland
THE ceremony was co-hosted by Jonathan Mills, Director of Edinburgh International Festival and Karen Dunbar actor and comedian. The winner of our Award for Best New Play was Ursula Rani Sarma for her play The Dark Things at the Traverse Theatre.

Major Scottish accolade for Lahinch writer
NORTH Clare writer scooped two awards at the recent Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland. Ursula Rani Sarma is a writer of Irish/Indian descent. She grew up in Lahinch and has been writing predominantly for theatre since graduating from University College Cork in 1999. Ursula co-founded Djinn Productions later that year and has directed several award-winning productions as artistic director of the company. Currently resident in London, Ursula took the honours at the Scottish awards for her first Traverse Theatre Company commission, The Dark Things.

The CATS get the cream of stage productions
IT speaks volumes for my confidence in their success, of course – or at least that's my story and I'm sticking to it – but last Sunday was the first time I attended the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland. I have several chapters of justification for this – which I will precis, you'll be glad to hear – but after the third withering look I did stop admitting to the theatre folk of auld Scotia that they'd been getting gongs from the critical community since 2003 without me ever bothering to show face.

Dundee Rep picks up three CATS Awards
DUNDEE Rep Theatre took three awards at yesterday's Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). It was the Rep's production of The Elephant Man, staged last October that brought success in three categories including best director for Jemima Levick. It was third time lucky for the Rep associate director, who has received two previous nominations in the category.

National Theatre of Scotland wins at CATS
THE eighth annual Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland were held at Edinburgh Festival Theatre yesterday and saw the National Theatre of Scotland add another award to its collection. Mr Write by Rob Drummond won the award for Best Production for Children and Young People, an award won previously by the National Theatre of Scotland in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

CATSTheatre Studies PhD student Kieran Hurley has been nominated in the category Best New Play in this year's Critics Awards for Theatre in Scotland (CATS). Kieran has been nominated for his play Hitch which was produced at The Arches earlier this year. Another Theatre Studies graduate is also in the running for one of this year's CATS. Graham Sutherland (MA 2002), who is the Head of Lighting and Sound at the Citizens' Theatre Glasgow, has been nominated in the category Best Design for his lighting design of Cinderella at the Citizens' in November/ December 2009.

A PLAY about falling in love with a goat and a play about a paraplegic pole dancer are among the most highly regarded theatre productions in Scotland in the last year, according to Scotland's theatre critics. Blackbird play postponed
The Singapore Repertory Theatre (SRT) has postponed its production of the play Blackbird because lead actor Patrick Teoh has pulled out of it. The play, a tense psychological thriller with two characters and written by Scottish playwright David Harrower, was scheduled to run from March 6 to 20 at the DBS Arts Centre. It will now be staged in September.

IN October 2008, Midsummer (a play with songs), the result of the collaboration between playwright David Greig and singer-songwriter Gordon McIntyre, premiered at the Traverse in Edinburgh, and following a nomination for Best New Play at the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland, went on to tour in Scotland, Ireland, and Canada. It is now being presented in London at the Soho Theatre.

Interview: John Dove - 'It's a masterpiece. You would never miss a chance to work on this in a million years'
TO have Dove back in the Edinburgh theatre is good news. This is his fourth Arthur Miller play here and his track record is exemplary. He came first Ð at the invitation of artistic director Mark Thomson, who had worked with him at Hampstead Theatre Ð with a production of Death of a Salesman in 2004. The show had a fierce emotional momentum, the 11-strong cast was flawless and Paul Jesson's fantastic turn as Willy Loman earned him a nomination for best actor in the Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland.
