The majority of theatre in Scotland takes place in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the country's two principle cities. It is here you will find the big traditional theatre buildings such as Glasgow's Theatre Royal, Citizens' Theatre, King's and Pavilion and Edinburgh's Royal Lyceum, Playhouse and King's. For newplays and more adventurous theatre, Glasgow has the Tramway, Tron and Arches, while Edinburgh has the Traverse - not to mention countless venues that spring into life as if from nowhere during the annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August.
Many independent companies are based in the two big cities, whether it's Vox Motus and Vanishing Point in Glasgow or Grid Iron and Magnetic North in Edinburgh. Glasgow is also the administrative home of the National Theatre of Scotland, a highly flexibible organisation that collaborates with other Scottish theatre companies.
That's certainly not the end of the story, however. There are active theatre companies all over the country, among them Perth Theatre, Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Dundee Rep, with its permenanent ensemble of actors. There are also major receiving houses such as His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen and Eden Court in Inverness and a host of small-scale touring componies including Mull Theatre and, from Caithness, Grey Coast.
